The Science Olympics in Montreal - the beginning

This year, I have decided to try to start a Science Olympics in the West Island of Montreal.

I have taken a year off of "official" teaching at a school - I find that it's just too much work, and not enough time for creative thinking or doing. I have so many ideas, and with a full time workload, I could do nothing else but survive the school year. So I have decided to take some time off and see if all my ideas can come to fruition and I can accomplish something of value.

Since I still have to live and eat, for money, I am doing math and science workshops for homeschooled children, as well as some tutoring. This gives me enough time to think of how to accomplish my trully big goals (the big rocks into the aquarium).

One of these main goals is to start a Science Olympics on the Island of Montreal.

There are a few things I have to overcome. First of all, for now I'm a nobody - a science / math teacher. I need to get known or else get affiliated with somebody or some organization that is known, such as the John Abbott College or McGill University. Once I have that affiliation, there is a higher chance that schools will be interested in participating. Also, there might be a higher chance of getting free or close to free location for the event at a CEGEP or the University, if they are involved. On top of that, maybe companies will be willing to sponser the event when there is a backing of a bigger university behind the event.

Also, I am an anglophone in a francophone province. The West Island, it seems, is a little island of English-speaking people, and I think if we did it here in the West Island, I would be able to have the event an English event, for the English speakers of Montreal and surroundings. I find that there are a lot of events in French for the French learners, it would be nice to organize something for the English learners of Montreal.

The next few weeks are crucial, so that the ball can get rolling on the event. Many students will participate in Science Fair, which is usually in February or March, so it would be nice to have the Science Olympics either in January or in April not to collide with any other popular science events. There is not much time this year, but hopefully it will be a success, and maybe an even greater success next year.
